Methodology
How we recommend fixes and products
Every recommendation comes from rules you can read: no black box, no paid placement, and no invented data.
1. Compatibility rules come first
Each fix in our system has written compatibility requirements and exclusions, such as “suction cups need a smooth, non-porous surface” or “several vinyl flooring makers warn that rubber backings can stain vinyl.” These are hard rules. If your answers rule a fix out, it’s excluded no matter how well it would otherwise rank, and we show you why under Ruled out for your situation.
2. Then we rank what’s left, and explain the ranking
Remaining options are ranked by how well they match your answers. Every ranking boost has a plain-language reason, which you’ll see as Why this fits. Budget preferences adjust the order, but never override compatibility.
3. Free fixes before purchases
Many household problems can be solved by rearranging, cleaning, or using something you already own. When a no-purchase option fits, we show it, often first. If you tell us which tools you already have, we factor that in.
4. Uncertainty is shown, not hidden
If you skip a question or aren’t sure, we don’t assume the best case. Fixes that depend on the missing detail are marked Check first with the exact thing to verify, and the plan’s overall confidence is lowered.
5. How we label evidence
- Verified compatibility: Our editors confirmed this fit from documented sources.
- Manufacturer-stated: Based on what the maker states. We haven’t independently tested it.
- General guidance: Widely used practice, not a product-specific guarantee.
- Not yet established: We couldn’t confirm compatibility for your situation.
Most technique advice is general guidance: widely used practice, not a guarantee for a specific product. Manufacturer care guides for your floor, furniture, or walls always take precedence over our general advice.
6. Products: verified or not shown
We only show a specific product after an editor has reviewed its details and recorded what its compatibility is based on, with a review date. We never invent ASINs, prices, ratings, reviews, or availability, and we don’t scrape Amazon. Where we haven’t verified a product yet, you’ll see buying criteria (what to look for and what to avoid) instead of a guess.
A product is only recommended when its stated compatibility covers your specific answers. A product that hasn’t been confirmed for your floor type, for example, won’t be shown as a match.
7. Affiliate links don’t change recommendations
Some links go to Amazon with our Associates tag, and we may earn a commission on qualifying purchases. The recommendation engine has no access to commission rates and doesn’t use them. See our affiliate disclosure.
8. Safety limits
We don’t give advice on electrical work, structural changes, gas, or serious mold. For those, consult a licensed professional. We never suggest mixing cleaning chemicals, and we flag tip-over, trip, and load-limit risks where they apply.
Corrections
If something we recommend is wrong for your situation, or a manufacturer’s guidance has changed, please tell us. We update guides and rules, and record the date of each update.
