How this tool decides
The Grip Finder works in two passes. First, compatibility rules remove anything that doesn’t suit your floor or furniture. For example, rubber-faced pads are ruled out on vinyl (several vinyl makers warn they can stain), hard-floor pads are ruled out on carpet, and adhesive fixes are ruled out if you said no adhesives. Then the remaining fixes are ranked by fit, and each ranking reason is shown in your plan.
If you skip a question or choose “Not sure,” nothing is assumed. Fixes that depend on that detail are marked Check first with exactly what to verify.
Quick reference: what grips where
| Floor | Rug fix | Furniture fix | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood or engineered wood | Rug pad suited to wood floors | Grippers sized to the legs; felt for protection | New finishes need to cure before pads or rugs go down |
| Luxury vinyl plank or tile | Pad its maker names as vinyl-safe, checked against your floor guide | Grippers or cups whose maker names vinyl | Rubber and latex backings can stain vinyl |
| Laminate | Rug pad suited to laminate | Grippers sized to the legs | Check your floor’s care guide on rubber |
| Tile or stone | Rubber-faced pads grip well | Grippers grip well | Grout lines can reduce contact for small grippers |
| Wall-to-wall carpet | Rug-to-carpet pad plus furniture anchoring | Furniture cups to spread load | Hard-floor pads and grippers don’t grip carpet |
Felt pads vs. grippers
Felt pads protect floors by letting furniture glide. That makes them the right choice for chairs you move all day, and the wrong choice for a sofa that already slides. Grippers do the opposite. Many rooms need both: felt under the dining chairs, grippers under the sofa.
